Culture and etiquette

Language, customs and settling in without causing offence.

Language

Nepali is the official language and many other languages are spoken across the country. English is widely used in higher education and in cities. Learning even a small amount of Nepali is noticed and appreciated, and makes daily life considerably easier.

Everyday customs

Dress modestly, particularly at religious sites. Remove footwear where indicated before entering homes and temples. Use your right hand for giving and receiving. Ask before photographing people or ceremonies. These are small courtesies but they matter.

Festivals and the academic year

Major festivals are significant national occasions and institutions commonly adjust teaching around them. Ask your institution how its academic calendar treats festival periods so you can plan travel and study accordingly.
